The Foothills Highland Games Celebrate Tradition and Culture

If you're of Scottish descent, you probably know that for you, the holiday season in Western North Carolina begins well before Thanksgiving Day. In fact, it begins next weekend on November 7th when the Scottish Clans of the South, Inc., come to Jackson Park in Hendersonville, NC, for their annual gathering at the Foothills Highland Games and Festival. Whether sporting your own family tartan or simply interested in the one thousand year old traditions of the Scots, the event is sure to entertain festival-goers with an invitation to experience living history at it s best.

In celebration of their culture and history, Scottish clansmen will gather to compete in one of the most rigorous athletic competitions in the world. Watch as participants compete in feats of strength with the caber toss, hammer throw, tugs of war, and more. And if something less strenuous is more your style, highland dancers, Celtic bands, a parade of tartans, children's activities and games, sheep herding demonstrations, and, of course, incredible food vendors will be part of the line-up, too.

The excitement begins at 9 a.m. and continues through the afternoon until 4:30. But you might want to consider extending the day's activities into an entire weekend of fun by scheduling a tour of nearby Fox Run Preserve, a Hendersonville gated community. The vistas of fall color are some of the best you'll find in the region, and while you won't hear many pipes and drums or see many kilts, you'll probably enjoy the sounds of the undisturbed hardwood forest just as much. Located just minutes from Jackson Park, Fox Run Preserve places residents in an unparalleled location, allowing them to enjoy the beauty of four distinct seasons without having to miss out on the urban offerings of Hendersonville, North Carolina.
