Hendersonville Celebrates Preservation Week

May 10th through the 16th will mark Hendersonville, NC's inaugural "Preservation Week," and, considering its name, the gated community of Fox Run Preserve couldn't be more excited. Each day will offer an activity that honors and draws attention and awareness to the town's rich architectural and cultural heritage while at the same time introducing visitors and local residents to some area attractions and lesser known facts about the town.

The first event of the week will be the Heritage Plant Sale at the Bullington Center. As a 12-acre public garden, the Bullington Center provides hands-on education experiences and is a haven for many native plants. The heritage sale will offer heirloom tomatoes, herbs, native ornamentals, and more. Visitors may also participate in a thirty minute class covering historical uses of several Western North Carolina plants.

Preservation Week will also draw attention to Carl Sandburg's former home and farm Connemara. Located in nearby Flat Rock, visitors will enjoy the opportunity to learn about the process of preserving the home as well as about the renovations that have taken place since it became an historic site. A self-guided walking tour of seven churches in downtown Hendersonville on Mqarch 13th will also focus on the area's architectural history and will also reveal insight into the Blue Ridge Mountain culture. On Friday, another tour will of the historic Oakdale Cemetery will be offered and will cover local history, characters, and scandal.

Throughout the week, there will also be opportunities to learn about preservation in Hendersonville real estate, and while Fox Run Preserve does not offer historic sites, the community does focus on a different type of preservation. Western North Carolina is well-known for its beautiful scenery and inspiring landscape, and Fox Run offers homesites and a community centered on those qualities. By limiting the community to 44 homes and homesites, Fox Run insures the preservation of woodlands and waterways for generations to come.
