Hendersonville Celebrates Appalachian Traditions
As cooler temperatures arrive this weekend, residents of Hendersonville, North Carolina, are preparing to celebrate with traditional Appalachian events and activities. The mild, mountain climate will be an ideal setting for the festivities and will be a welcome break during a busy summer.
On Friday, July 9th, residents and visitors alike are invited to kick off their weekend with a free concert. Tom Brown will perform oldies rock as part of the Music on Main Street concert series. Attendees will also have the opportunity to enjoy the Hendersonville Antique Car Club Classic Car Show.
Saturday, July 10th, will offer another mountain tradition with the "Do Tell" Storyfest. The second annual event will feature Appalachian and Cherokee storytellers who will regale their audiences with enthralling tales of adventure, humor, and more.
On July 12th, Western North Carolina residents will once again head outdoors for the second installment of this season's annual street dances. A tradition for 92 years, the dance revives the area's rich mountain heritage and brings it back to life for today's Appalachian enthusiasts. The dances began after World War I when townsmen and women were celebrating the return of local soldiers. Today, the same spirit of celebration and mountain hospitality remain while musicians strum out tunes from banjos and fiddles. A local caller helps dancers learn the steps by shouting out lively instructions, and there are sure to be many experienced dancers who beginners can learn from. On Monday, the Mountain Thunder Cloggers will lead the way as they dance to the sounds of the band Country Farm.
