Find Inspiration at Connemara

With four distinct seasons, it should come as no surprise that Western North Carolina has long been a beacon of inspiration and a home for novelists, poets, and other writers for generations. From Thomas Wolfe's historic home in downtown Asheville and F. Scott Fitzgerald's home away from home at the Grove Park Inn to local authors who regularly hold readings at Malaprop's and area colleges and universities with nationally-recognized writing curriculums, the region often acts as residence and setting for those immersed in the literary world.

The intersection between contemporary voices and the preservation of those past allows the Asheville area to enjoy a unique culture that invites residents and visitors alike to experience through activities, workshops, and museum visits. One of the most well-known literary attractions in Western North Carolina in Connemara, the site of Carl Sandburg's final home. The home, which rests on an ecologically-diverse 267 acres, offers incredible views of the local landscape and includes a goat farm, which was once tended to by Sandburg's wife.

On September 18th, the Sandburg home will open its doors to visitors for a Fall into the Farm festival. Designed to celebrate the writer and his most-celebrated work, the day will feature visits with Abraham Lincoln, about whom Sandburg composed a biography, cheese demonstrations, old time music, garden and barn tours, and more. The day, which is already forecasted to be full of sunshine and gorgeous, autumn weather, will also be a perfect opportunity to venture over to Fox Run Preserve, Hendersonville's premier gated community.

Located minutes from a variety of popular attractions, the community epitomizes what so many writers have found to be inspiring in Western North Carolina. With endless mountain views, walking trails, a tranquil pond, and more, the community promises to be a muse to all who enter.
