November Update
For several months we have had the privilege of exploring every inch of Fox Run Preserve, from the creek and willows that greet you upon entry through the stands of hardwoods in the preserve to the breath-taking vistas at Blazing Star Point. We started with an ideal of a refined, nature-based community and designed many of the amenity structures in this vein. There was a slight wrinkle... it just did not feel 100% right. This land just did not want to be something so refined.
After many mornings sitting beside Crane Pond or watching the sun rise or set from Blazing Star Point many of our guys/gals came away with a similar feeling, but struggled to put a fine point on exactly what the feeling was and what "right" looks like.
As is often the case, inspiration came from a most unlikely source. One sunny afternoon, a member of the team was exploring the trail system with wife and kids in tow. While rambling though the woods the kids started in singing a camp song in a cheerful chorus... the "ah-hah" moment. It did feel like summer camp. The creeks and trails connecting the pond to the preserve and the views from the top of the property speak to a simpler time when "playing" outside was tops on the list of thing to do.
Why should the adult summer camp experience be limited to drop off and pick up as you watch your child sprint from the car? Why couldn't we linger a while? Wait a second... if we were invited to stay, how would we tweak the experience?
This idea really struck a chord. Without an elaborate pitch, or fancy "visioning exercise" the team got it... in a big way. Now the amenities make sense and feel like they really fit the land. An organic orchard will fill the field as you enter the community. The ruins from past structures are being repurposed throughout the community. Stone from the cabin's fireplace and foundation has found its way into the fire pits and retaining walls around the property. Trees are being milled on site to build the other structures. Even the old outhouse will be reincarnated as a tool shed at the community garden... Have we gone overboard? I don't think so. We have figured out what "right" feels like. Come on out and see for yourself. Sit on the dock and watch for the Roger's bass that hangs out beneath the shadows along the bank of Crane pond. Load Chris and David's fire pits with wood from Josh's wood rack. Alex has been busy making directional signage so you won't get totally lost, unless that is your intent. Try and find Lee and Cory's "Wine Shack". If you find Lee and/or Cory in the process, have them call...
