DuPont State Forest is an Outdoor Playground

As Hendersonville and Asheville begin to see signs of the impending warmth of spring, you can almost hear the collective sigh of front doors swing shut as western North Carolina residents head out to enjoy what has made the region such a special place: the mountains. DuPont State Forest, located just 12 miles from Fox Run Preserve, is just one of the many playgrounds for hikers, mountain bikers, kayakers, equestrians, and fisherman.

dupont state forestEncompassing more than 10,000 acres across Henderson and Transylvania Counties, DuPont State Forest offers a wealth of ecological, historical, and recreational attractions. It features 90 miles of trails and multiple breath-taking waterfalls, conveniently situated for those seeking either a leisurely walk or more challenging  hike. It's hard to know where to start with thousands of acres of natural mountain beauty just waiting to be explored, but most locals can agree that Little River is host to the most awe-inspiring scenery. With four waterfalls that are easily accessible by trails and parking areas, Little River truly defines the magical attraction of the region. Each of the falls is unique in what it offers to visitors.

The first is Bridal Veil Falls, which is perhaps the most unique of them all. At first, it drops off an overhanging ledge where visitors can get a truly unparalleled view as they walk underneath the cascading water. You may recognize the sight from Last of the Mohicans, which featured many areas from the state forest. After the dramatic plunge, the falls go on over a gently inclining granite slope where the water flows into a calm pool.

If you're looking for something more extreme, consider exploring High Falls, the second along the Little River. Reaching 150 feet, it's obvious how it got its name. There is a picnic shelter from which to enjoy the view, or visitors can test their footing on the slippery trail leading to the bottom.

The third, Triple Falls, is just a seven minute walk from the Hooker Falls parking area. Visitors can't get a better reward than a short walk yielding to a tri-layered waterfall. Hooker Falls, the fourth along the Little River, is the neighbor to Triple Falls and is the best place for those wanting a summer escape in its cooling waters. After an 11 foot drop, the fall flows into Cascade Lake, which has become a popular swimming spot for locals.

In addition to the waterfalls, the DuPont State Forest area abounds with opportunities for fishing ahigh fallsnd horseback riding among other activities. With Stone Mountain, Lake Julia, Cedar Rock Mountain, and Corn Mill Shoals swimming hole, there is an activity for every outdoor enthusiast.
