The Flat Rock Playhouse Gears Up For Another Season
Asheville and Hendersonville residents are eagerly awaiting the start of The Flat Rock Playhouse's upcoming season that begins March 27th with the play Princess Reform School, running through April 5th. Penned by Lisa K. Bryant and presented by the YouTheatre, Princess Reform School delves into what being a princess really means. Apart from learning the ins and outs of royal etiquette and adhering to the proper dress code, the princesses must also question societal expecations of women in an attempt to reach self-acceptance. With a set design that looks like it was pulled from the pages of a fairytale, this play is sure to charm audiences of every age.

Located just seven miles from Fox Run Preserve, The Flat Rock Playhouse has long been an integral part of the regional arts community. And as the official state theatre of North Carolina, the Playhouse is able to showcase state-of-the-art facilities, exceptional actors and acctresses, and impressive costume and set designs.
Apart from enthralling plays, The Flat Rock Playhouse also boasts a rich history of contributions to the performing arts. Formed in 1937, what is now the Playhouse began as an acting troupe called The Vagabond Players out of New York City. During their travels, the group ended up in the Blue Ridge Mountains in 1940, wowing the welcoming crowds who were happy to enjoy another facet of Western North Carolina's emerging tourist industry. In fact, the audiences in the area enjoyed them so much that The Vagabond Players returned the next year to present another summer season of plays at The Old Mill Playhouse at Highland Lake.
After a hiatus during World War II, the group reorganized and thrived at the Lake Summit Playhouse and quickly began looking for a permanent and larger home to accomodate their ever-growing fan base. In 1952, with the leadership of the newly formed Board of Directors, The Vagabond Players found that home on eight acres ofo land in Flat Rock.
Today, The Flat Rock Playhouse, which seats 506, is easily recognized by its barn-like appearance that is reminiscent of The Vagabond Players' beginnings in a converted grist mill. Of course, once audiences make their way through the doors, they quickly realize that the venue is far from rustic. From the lighting and sound systems to the electronic stage and 40-person dressing area, The Flat Rock Playhouse is equipped with the best in the business. And with their mission that focuses not only on production but also on learning, the 8-acre lot is also host to an Education Center outfitted with a dance floor, offices, and classroom and workshop space.
Fortunately for the 90,000 annual patrons, The Flat Rock Playhouse now features and eight month season complete with ten plays. The upcoming season includes Ring of Fire--The Music of Johnny Cash, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Around the World in 80 Days, and more. Visit their website to reserve your ticket today. And once you go to enjoy a play, be sure to pick up a refreshing glass of their traditional Honey Lemonade at the concession stand. Audiences will soon see that the Playhouse's legacy and history of quality productions and community arts contributions remain unchanged.
